There is nothing better than being able to use your creative energy to make beautiful jewelry that you can actually wear. Making jewelry can be a fun, relaxing, and monetary hobby if you put your heart into it. In addition, there are so many branches within the realm of jewelry-making, such as metalsmithing, wire-wrapping, bead looming, and more!
Here are Some Helpful Jewelry-Making Tips to Consider:
1. Choose One Jewelry Technique To Learn First
As we mentioned earlier, there are a plethora of jewelry-making techniques to learn. Some are more in-depth than others and require much more time and patience. We recommend choosing one beginner jewelry-making technique to learn first before jumping into advanced jewelry-making techniques that require more skill.
2. Invest in Good Quality Jewelry-Making Tools
Investing in a decent pair of flat-nose pliers, round-nose pliers, and flush cutters will save you from hours of frustration. There is nothing worse than trying to make jewelry with a pair of pliers that no longer springs. More importantly, be sure to invest in an excellent pair of flush cutters if you are going to be working with wire.
3. Learn how to Speak in Jewelry-Lingo
It is important to learn the proper names of jewelry-making supplies and materials in order to not annoy or confuse your local bead shop workers. Just kidding! But seriously, it is probably a good idea to learn the different types of ear wires and the right way to ask for specific size beads. Pro-Tip: Most beads and charms are measured in millimeter, so we recommend investing in a caliper.
4. Take a Jewelry-Making Class
Yes, there are a ton of YouTube videos that can help you with learning basic jewelry-making techniques but nothing beats hands-on guidance from an expert. We recommend taking a few jewelry-making classes to ensure that you are doing everything correctly. Your instructor may even have their own helpful tips and tricks that you wouldn’t be able to find online!
5. Keep Practicing!
As with all new skills, it is nearly impossible to master them in one hour. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t pick up wire-wrapping as quickly as you would have liked. Keep practicing and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
