Silk is Great for Beading

Silk Cord

The softness and stability Silk provides is one of the reasons it is very popular among beaders. You can make a simple necklace by stringing gemstone beads, or you can take it a step further and knot in-between each bead.

Using the knotting technique, which can be learned in one of our Classes, you can make Malas/Prayer Beads with silk. One of the great things about this material is its ability to enhance your project. Pick a color that blends in with the existing beads, or go off the beaten path and choose a contrasting color. If you wanted to go the extra mile you can even create your own tassels.

One of our favorite bead cord brands is Griffin it is made of 100% natural silk. The sizes we carry range from 1-10 and comes in a rainbow of colors. Each package has two strands of twisted together that wraps around a cardboard backer. It even comes with its own attached needle so you don’t have to worry about threading it.

You don’t need extra tools when working with silk, but we do recommend using a thread conditioner or wax. By waxing the cord, beads slide easier. The less resistance, the longer the cord lasts.
