A look at August’s radiant birthstone

Peridot is most well known for being the birthstone for August and the traditional anniversary gemstone gift for 16th anniversaries. There is a deep history and many mythological lore surrounding this beautiful bright green stone that has been prized for centuries.

Early records indicate that Peridot was a gemstone found by ancient Egyptians on an island in the Red Sea, now known as ST. John’s Island or Zabargad. “Egyptians called it the “gem of the sun.” Some believed that it protected its owner from “terrors of the night,” especially when it was set in gold. Others strung the gems on donkey hair and tied them around their left arms to ward off evil spirits.”1

Referred to as “born of fire and brought to light,” Peridot is the only other gem (alongside Diamonds) that is formed in the molten rock of the upper mantle and brought to the surface by the force of earthquakes or volcanoes.

This gorgeous green gemstone is still believed to be a wonderful stone to use for protection against negativity, bringing joy and happiness to its wearer, and balancing emotions. You might also find it beneficial to use this stone to encourage restful sleep and detoxification. Peridot relates to the heart chakra, and is linked to compassion, love, and affection, and has the ability to open the heart and purify it.
